What is OC3 Internet? In telecommunications, OC3 is the abbreviation of Optical Carrier Level 3. The number specifies the speed of the fiber optic network. OC3 speed is measured by Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) standards. OC3 Internet service is an optical connection based on a carrier fiber optic backbone and transmits large volumes traffic. The primary function of an OC3 connection is to take, synchronize and transport voice, data and video at a speed of 155 Megabits per second (Mbps). An OC3 connection is the equivalent of 100 T1 lines or three DS3s. OC3 Internet service can be delivered as three DS3s or as one 155 MB pipe. The advantage of bringing in an OC3 in as three DS3s is that each DS3 can be separated into individual T1s with 24 channels per T1.
In addition to an OC3 connection, OC12, OC24, OC48, OC192, OC256 and OC768 are available from select telecom carriers. OC3 Internet service is primarily used by large enterprises that rely on dependable high speed Internet access. An OC3 Internet connection can cost anywhere from $20,000 - $45,000 to maintain each month.
