What is ISDN PRI? Integrated Service Digital Network Primary Rate Interface (ISDN PRI) is a telecommunications protocol that enables voice and data simultaneously over traditional phone lines and IP/PBX phone systems. ISDN PRI lines provide many benefits including cost-savings, 100% digital clarity and features such as caller ID which not found with traditional phone lines. ISDN PRI lines are based on the PRI T1 line in the US and the PRI E1 line in Europe and Asia. An ISDN PRI T1 line is capable of providing 24 total channels including 23 B-Channels (Bearer) and 1 D-channel (Data). The D-channel is a data channel associated with caller ID information transmission. An ISDN PRI T1 provides transmission speeds of 1.54 Mbps or 64 Kbps per channel. In Europe, the ISDN PRI E1 is capable of providing 32 total channels including access to 30 B-channels and 2 D-channels. ISDN PRI E1 provides transmission speeds of 2.05 Mbps. Can ISDN PRI lines be provisioned to increase bandwidth? There are additional bandwidth options available with ISDN PRI T1 and PRI E1 services. An ISDN PRI T1 line can be bonded through paring allowing for access to 46 B-channels and 2 D-channels. This allows for up to 46 simultaneous calls or a combination of voice and data usage.
